Key funding trends in grants for reproductive health & justice
Philanthropic giving for reproductive health, rights and justice is substantial and evolving — even if it represents a small share of overall philanthropy. Charitable giving for reproductive health increased significantly from 2012 to 2017, and there was a surge in giving for abortion-related causes after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Grants in this area fund an array of efforts, from direct healthcare services to legislative advocacy. Historically, the lion’s share of funding has gone to large national organizations, such as Planned Parenthood, the National Abortion Federation and Reproductive Freedom for All (formerly NARAL Pro-Choice America), but in the wake of the Dobbs decision, there is a growing focus on advocacy at the state level, where struggles for abortion rights and access are taking place.
Funders have also increasingly adopted an intersectional approach that understands reproductive justice — defined by SisterSong as “the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities” — as inextricably linked to racial justice, gender justice, community wellness, democracy and more. Still, there are gaps in funding for organizations led by and serving women and girls of color, trans people, immigrants and other groups. Reproductive health, rights and justice grants overlap with grants for women, international development, racial equity, climate change, overall health and other giving areas.
Major funders for reproductive heath & justice
Private and family foundations including Susan Thompson Buffett, Ford, Gates, Hewlett, Packard and Pivotal Ventures make substantial grants in this area. Intermediaries such as Groundswell Fund, Ms. Foundation for Women and Third Wave Fund play a critical role in regranting funds, especially to grassroots reproductive justice organizations. Notable donor collaboratives include the Collaborative for Gender and Reproductive Equity and the Proteus Fund’s Rights, Faith and Democracy Collaborative. Resources for individuals seeking financial assistance to access reproductive healthcare are provided via organizations such as Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project and local abortion funds.
Corporate funders tend to be less prominent in this field, as they shy away from controversial issues like abortion, while funders at the state level vary according to what state law permits.

AFRICAN WOMEN’S DEVELOPMENT FUND
The African Women’s Development Fund makes grants to women’s organizations throughout Africa and, occasionally, in the Middle East. Grantmaking focuses on health, economic development, justice, leadership and civic participation.
AMERICAN JEWISH WORLD SERVICE
This global funder makes grants for women and girls sexual reproductive health and rights around the world.
ANDERSON-ROGERS FOUNDATION
The Anderson-Rogers Foundation broadly funds efforts in the fields of reproductive rights, sex education, agriculture, food and the separation of church and state in the U.S.
ARGOSY FOUNDATION
The Argosy Foundation has recently reiterated its commitment to reproductive health in the U.S.
ARNOLD VENTURES
Among its many other areas of giving, Arnold Ventures also gives for reproductive health, especially toward contraceptive choice and access.
BANCKER-WILLIAMS FOUNDATION
This international development funder makes modest grants for reproductive health at the global level.
ERIK AND EDITH BERGSTROM FOUNDATION
The Bergstrom Foundation supports reproductive health in the United States, Latin America and some countries in East Africa. It also makes grants for conservation and economic development.
JACOB AND HILD BLAUSTEIN FOUNDATION

SUSAN THOMPSON BUFFETT FOUNDATION
The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation funds scholarships for college students from Nebraska and grants to colleges and universities in the U.S. It is also the top private funder of sexual and reproductive health and rights work worldwide.
BURNING FOUNDATION
Burnings’s grants for reproductive health focus on teen pregnancy prevention that promotes “science-based teen pregnancy prevention” including school-based health and education programs, mentoring projects, and community clinic programs providing information and services. Grants remain local and invest in organizations that are based in or operating in Washington State and Oregon.
BURROUGHS WELLCOME FUND
A major grantmaker of science research grants, the fund invests in “reproductive sciences” and a pregnancy initiative in order to support research on causes and conditions relating to preterm birth and maternal complications.
BUSHROD H. CAMPBELL AND ADAH F. HALL CHARITY FUND
Campbell and Hall Charity Fund supports organizations based in the U.S. that address reproductive health on an international scale and the needs of Boston, Massachusetts, on a local scale.
MARGARET A. CARGILL PHILANTHROPIES
This major funder makes grants in several focus areas across the U.S. Funding for women’s health exists as an important sub-category evidenced in recent giving.
CHANEL FOUNDATION
The foundation of the iconic make-up brand, Chanel makes reproductive health grants to address preventable causes related to complications of pregnancy and childbirth, and help to reduce early marriage and pregnancy.
CHANNEL FOUNDATION

CHICAGO COMMUNITY TRUST
The Chicago Community Trust funds a broad range of initiatives, programs and collaboratives in the Chicago area.
CHILDREN’S INVESTMENT FUND FOUNDATION
This London-based funder makes grants at the international level for reproductive and maternal health with a particular interest in adolescent health and mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. Reproductive rights are another issue of interest here.
NAOMI AND NEHEMIAH COHEN FOUNDATION
Beyond its numerous areas of funding, Cohen maintains a dedicated program for Reproductive Health & Choice focused on sex education. While the foundation makes grants throughout the U.S., it prioritizes programs in the District of Columbia and suburban Maryland.
COLLINGWOOD FOUNDATION
Based in Los Angeles, Collingwood’s grants for reproductive health tend to prioritize the Greater Los Angeles area, while LGBTQ grants may occur at the national level.
THE COMMONWEALTH FUND
Commonwealth’s grants in this area intersect with support for research dedicated to reproductive justice and maternal health, with an emphasis on equity.
COMMUNITIES FOUNDATION OF TEXAS
This funder funder largely focuses giving on the Texas counties of Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, Collin, or Rockwall counties.
COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF GREATER MEMPHIS

The charitable foundation of Michael Moritz and Harriet Heyman, this funder’s giving concentrates in the Bay Area, Chicago and the U.K. with support for women’s reproductive health.
DESAI FOUNDATION
Desai’s grants for reproductive health focus on teaching women how to make and sell menstrual products as a part of the foundation’s investments in international development.
DEVON CREEK FOUNDATION

THE DUKE ENDOWMENT
The Duke Endowment supports higher education and public health, prioritizing the states of North and South Carolina. Part of Duke’s funding for public health invests widely in women’s reproductive health and infants.
EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION OF AMERICA
EDA makes grants for reproductive health through a program dedicated to reproductive health and justice, which makes grants in Appalachia and Florida, as well as the Pacific Northwest.
EQUALITY FUND
In addition to work that intersects with women’s rights and LGBTQ justice, the Equality Fund has a dedicate program that focuses on sexual and reproductive health and rights.
EVERY MOTHER COUNTS
Every Mother Counts supports safe pregnancy and childbirth, birth justice, and access to quality maternal healthcare in the U.S. and abroad.
LELAND FIKES FOUNDATION
The Leland Fikes Foundation supports reproductive justice, civic engagement, medical research and Dallas-area human services.
FORD FOUNDATION
In addition to a wide array of grant programs, Ford’s grants for reproductive health focus on gender justice and reproductive health rights in the U.S. rather than at the international level.
FOUNDATION FOR THE CAROLINAS
This is a regional funder that serves a 13-county region in North Carolina and South Carolina. It distributes donor-advised funds and has a competitive grant program. Among other interests, funding invests in women’s reproductive health.
FOUNDATION FOR A JUST SOCIETY
The Foundation for a Just Society funds a number of grassroots organizations that seek to fill funding gaps in human rights matters related to marginalized women, girls, and LGBTI people all over the world. Reproductive rights are just one of the many human rights concerns here.
FUTURA FOUNDATIONS
The Futura Foundations focus on improving health, rights and economic outcomes for girls and women around the globe, as well as combating climate change through environmental sustainability.

A generous portion of this major funder’s giving invests in infant and maternal health, as well family planning, at both the national and global levels.

In addition to other areas of gender-focused grantmaking, this funder’s global health grantmaking centers on women’s health, reproductive health and healthcare access for underserved and marginalized populations.
LISA AND DOUGLAS GOLDMAN FUND
The fund’s grants for women tend to stay in the Bay area, where it is located; however, related grants here intersect with reproductive health advanced training for abortion providers and safety for abortion providers and patients.
GROVE FOUNDATION
The Grove Foundation supports civic engagement, racial equity, human rights, education, immigrants and refugees, women and girls, youth development, food security and an emphasis on California. Reproductive health grantmaking supports sex education and health access across the U.S.
GROUNDSWELL FUND
The fund conducts all of its grantmaking through a gender lens. A large portion of funding addresses women’s reproductive freedom and reproductive health, with grants going to women-led organizations around the U.S.
GROVE FOUNDATION
The Grove Foundation’s grants tend to prioritize California. Beyond its grants for women, it makes a handful of grants each year for reproductive health and freedom.
GRUBER FAMILY FOUNDATION
The Marin County-based Gruber Family Foundation supports women’s reproductive rights across the U.S, while its other funding areas prioritize California.
THE LEONA M. AND HARRY B. HELMSLEY CHARITABLE TRUST
The trust makes global development grants for maternal and infant care abroad.
WILLIAM AND FLORA HEWLETT FOUNDATION
This funder is one of the largest in the U.S. It makes grants for international development. Grants related to reproductive health and rights typically occur through Hewlett’s focus on women’s empowerment.
HIGHMARK FOUNDATION
The foundation’s Family Health program concerns “a broad range of issues which impact the family unit,” such as maternal health, infant health, adolescent health, senior health, bullying, obesity and family-centric nutrition.
CONRAD N. HILTON FOUNDATION
This funder is a major global grantmaker with an interest in early childhood health and development, youth, midwifery, and women’s reproductive health.
ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION
RWJF, the largest health funder in the U.S., also makes grants for women’s reproductive health, as well as infant health and mothers.
INTERNATIONAL PLANNED PARENTHOOD FEDERATION
The International Planned Parenthood Federation’s (IPPF) global health spending predominantly funds its affiliates — reproductive health service providers in countries around the world, but makes some grants, too.
VIOLET JABARA CHARITABLE TRUST
The Violet Jabara Charitable Trust makes grants to support work in the Middle East. It also funds efforts within the U.S. While the Jabara Charitable Trust does not have a program specifically for reproductive health, it is a listed interest.
JEWISH COMMUNAL FUND
The New York-based Jewish Communal Fund supports public health efforts related to women’s reproductive health and families in New York and beyond.
JOHNSON & JOHNSON FAMILY OF COMPANIES FOUNDATION
Some of the foundation’s health grants occur through its Women and Children program, which includes support for maternal and newborn health, fistula recovery, and ensuring women’s access to healthcare.
JPB FOUNDATION
JPB makes grants for reproductive health and justice through its Reproductive Justice, Medical Research and NYC Community program, though this area of funding is only a fraction of total giving.
GEORGE KAISER FAMILY FOUNDATION
The George Kaiser Family Foundation supports a broad range of issue areas in Tulsa and Oklahoma, including maternal and child health.
W.K. KELLOGG FOUNDATION
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s funding initiatives include thriving children, working families and equitable communities. Women’s health is an important area of giving.

A major funder in Southwestern, Pennsylvania, King Mellon makes investments in women’s reproductive health there.
LACEWING FOUNDATION
In addition to several other areas of giving, this funder makes grants for women’s reproductive health. While the foundation does not note geographic restrictions, it appears to prioritize groups that work in Africa or Latin and Central America.
LALOR FOUNDATION
The Lalor Foundation awards research fellowships for postdoctoral work in mammalian biology and grants that support reproductive and sexual health education programs.
LIBRA FOUNDATION
Through its funding for women focused on gender justice, Libra makes some grants for reproductive health and reproductive health at both the national and international levels.
DAVID AND LUCILE PACKARD FOUNDATION
While this major funder makes grants in a variety of area, its grants for reproductive health focus on maternal health and families, as well as research and advocacy for reproductive justice, among other related issues.

A relatively low-profile fund with a big policy footprint, the Moriah Foundation is inspired by Jewish philosophies of social justice. Its grants support education, human rights, women’s rights and reproductive health and promoting democracy and equity in Israel.
MS. FOUNDATION FOR WOMEN
The Ms. Foundation makes grants for birth justice that prioritize BIPOC and Indigenous populations “in addressing racial based health disparities in birth experiences and birth outcomes.”
MOTHER CABRINI HEALTH FOUNDATION
This New York state funder invests in the health and well-being of women via health care and family support efforts.
NEW VENTURE FUND
The New Venture Fund supports global health projects concerned with access to family planning information, services and supplies, as well as tobacco control initiatives.
THE NORCLIFFE FOUNDATION
Norcliffe focuses on the Puget Sound area of Washington and awards some grants for women’s reproductive health.
JESSIE SMITH NOYES FOUNDATION
The Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation seeks organizations that protect and expand access to reproductive health services and information for girls and women. Noyes prioritizes organizations in NYC, where it is based, as well as in Mississippi, but facilitates grantmaking across the United States.
OPEN PHILANTHROPY PROJECT
Open Philanthropy is an umbrella LLC comprised of several affiliated philanthropic organizations funded primarily by Cari Tuna and Dustin Moskovitz. This funder gives heavily to global health, among other concerns. Children’s health and women’s reproductive health is a large feature.
OPEN SOCIETY FOUNDATIONS
Within OSF’s labyrithinian grantmaking opportunities, it makes grants for reproductive justice and reproductive rights at the transnational level.
THE OREGON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
This funder supports access to infant and women’s reproductive health throughout the state of Oregon.
OVERBROOK FOUNDATION
The New York City-based Overbrook Foundation names human rights and the environment as its main areas of grantmaking focus; however, it funds a gender rights program that focuses on reproductive rights.
PEW CHARITABLE TRUSTS
The trusts give funds for research and advocacy related to women’s reproductive health.
PIVOTAL VENTURES
The grantmaking vehicle of Melinda French Gates, Pivotal Ventures has committed over $1 billion to building women’s power and access to reproductive health in the U.S. and abroad.
PROTEUS FUND
The Proteus Fund runs three collaborative grantmaking initiatives: the Piper Fund, the Rise Together Fund and the Faith, Rights and Democracy Collaborative. These funds mainly support collaborative and collective initiatives in the areas of civic engagement and democracy, LGBTQ causes, reproductive justice and racial equity.
BERNARD AND AUDRE RAPOPORT FOUNDATION
On a smaller scale in contrast to its other areas of funding, this grantmaker offers mid-sized grants for large organizations dedicated reproductive and maternal health in the U.S.
JOSEPH AND FLORENCE ROBLEE FOUNDATION
The Roblee Foundation invests in women’s reproductive rights as part of its grants for women’s issues.
THE ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION
The iconic foundation, which now prioritizes work that intersects with climate change, invests in reproductive health, reproductive rights, family planning and contraception.
ROTH FAMILY FOUNDATION
The Roth Family Foundation prioritizes Los Angeles and the surrounding areas of Southern California, but supports national and global initiatives as well. Roth’s grants for women tend to invest in reproductive health and rights have shifted to a focus on the U.S.
SCHERMAN FOUNDATION
The Scherman Foundation works in NYC and across the U.S. to support grass roots and community-led groups involved in democracy, reproductive justice, climate justice, arts and culture and more.
SEATTLE FOUNDATION
This major regional funder supports many “healthy community framework elements,” which include support for reproductive health and mothers. Seattle and King County are the geographic focus areas.
SILICON VALLEY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
The Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) is the biggest community foundation in America, and a major player on the Bay Area’s funding scene. Reproductive health is a major area of funding.
MARTY AND DOROTHY SILVERMAN FOUNDATION
This foundation prioritizes organizations in NYC, but gives across the U.S. Though it is not a predominant area of giving, Silverman’s funding promotes reproductive health and rights.
SIMMONS FOUNDATION
Beyond other areas of giving, Simmons’s grants for health ranges from a focus on reproductive health to mental health. Although Harris County is the primary geographical focus, Simmons occasionally funds organizations in other parts of Texas.
This funder especially invests in birth justice and maternal health across the nation.
SUMMIT FOUNDATION
The foundation’s international development giving largely supports adolescent sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) organizations advocating for the reproductive rights of marginalized girls living in the foundation’s areas of grantmaking interest, among other focus areas.

TOMBERG FAMILY PHILANTHROPIES
The Tomberg Family Philanthropies consists of two separate donor-advised funds. Grantmaking focuses on education, environmental initiatives, health and poverty alleviation in the U.S. and abroad. Some of Tomberg’s health grants have focused on maternal health outcomes, and to a lesser extent, general reproductive health.
UNITED HEALTH FOUNDATION
The charitable arm of UnitedHealth Group supports for access to women’s reproductive healthcare and family planning, among other areas.
URGENT ACTION FUND FOR WOMEN’S HUMAN RIGHTS
Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights offers rapid response grants to support women’s rights and transgender rights. This funder seeks to effect systemic change with its responsive and flexible funding approach. Part of this funder’s grants for women are related to reproductive rights.
VITOL FOUNDATION
The Vitol Foundation focuses its international development grantmaking. It prioritizes global health-related grants for access to quality healthcare and W.A.S.H. Some of its grants for women focus on access to quality reproductive health care including adolescent sexual healthcare.
WELLSPRING PHILANTHROPIC FUND
The Wellspring Philanthropic Fund is a global grantmaker that supports a wide variety of causes. Grantmaking occurs through an equity lens and also supports women’s reproductive health and rights.
WESTWIND FOUNDATION
This small, Virginia-based foundation predominantly supports U.S.-based environmental conservation groups and organizations that deliver reproductive services and advocate for reproductive health rights in the developing world. Reproductive health grants focus on promoting, protecting, and advancing reproductive health and rights, and funding sex education programs across the U.S.
WILD GEESE FOUNDATION
The Wild Geese Foundation supports organizations that are committed to creating a fair and just society and environmental causes. It funds groups and projects related to LGBTQ issues, youth causes, food security, reproductive freedom, BIPOC organizing and environmental justice.
WINSLOW FOUNDATION
The Winslow Foundation mainly supports environmental conservation and clean energy initiatives. Grants have also supported wildlife conservation and women’s reproductive health.
YELLOWHAMMER FUND
The Yellowhammer Fund supports abortion and reproductive justice in Alabama.
