Funding Trends for Public Health
We perceive public health as all the work that nonprofits and other advocates conduct to support health reforms that expand access and lower costs. Philanthropic investment in public health reveals a deep interest in this field, one of the largest areas of giving.
While government expenditure dominates public health through efforts such as Medicare and Medicaid, one estimate suggests that roughly 7% of health spending, or about $150 billion annually, derives from philanthropic contributions (National Health Expenditures Accounts data tables). Philanthropy takes a leading role in the public’s health through investments that address communicable diseases, like measles and COVID-19.
Many public health grantmakers address disparities in healthcare with a focus on expanding access to quality healthcare, which includes private and government-subsidized insurance expansion to low-income and vulnerable populations.
Significant private-sector funding in this space includes the Turning Point Initiative, sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which supports state and local public health agencies through its capacity-building efforts.
In addition to direct system changes, many foundations focused on public health also examine the social determinants of health, including public safety, housing, education, access to educational, economic and job opportunities. Increasingly, related health funding addresses food and diet as interconnected with childhood obesity; funding toward vaping, an emergent public health concern, has also increased dramatically.
Inside Philanthropy also notes a number of “health conversion” foundations, such as The California Endowment and the California Wellness Foundations, which resulted not from private wealth or corporate generosity, but from financial transactions involving nonprofit healthcare organizations, addressing not just access, but racial inequality and gun violence, issues that not long ago would not have been considered within the same domain as healthcare.
