Funding Trends
Philanthropy for global security and human rights supports a varied array of projects and organizations, including efforts to prevent and resolve international conflicts, to build and promote peace, and to support stable and resilient societies. While philanthropic giving for global security initiatives has receded since the Cold War, the rise of new global conflicts may lead to renewed or increased grantmaking in this area. Among the many elements that make a society stable and resilient, democracy, equality, and increasingly, cyber security and climate security are key concerns of philanthropists.
In recent years only about 1% of foundation giving has gone to global security initiatives, according to data from the Peace and Security Funders Group and Candid. However, even that small percentage of overall philanthropy represents hundreds of millions per year — $415.5 million in 2021, as Candid’s Peace and Security Funding Map shows.
While global security received more philanthropic attention during the Cold War, giving in this area has been decreasing since the end of that era. The MacArthur Foundation’s wind-down of grantmaking to address nuclear challenges after four decades is one example of the post-Cold War shift.
But a new era of global conflict may be prompting a return to philanthropic giving for global security. Emergency relief related to the war in Ukraine already represents an uptick in funding in this area. It remains to be seen whether this will represent longer-term giving for peace and security. IP’s Philip Rojc further explores these questions and the history of American philanthropy in support of international peace here.
When it comes to grants for peacebuilding, philanthropy backs things like research, institution building, policy and activism. Philanthropy also addresses the effects of conflict and lack of stability with grants focused on humanitarian relief, food insecurity, the needs of refugees, and other specific impacts.
Grants for human rights often invest in specific communities or regions. For instance, the Arcus Foundation works to increase safety and protections for LGBTQ people in 12 focus countries in the Americas and Africa. The Global Fund for Women supports gender-justice movements around the world, and part of that work includes grants for women and girls that work to protect and advance women’s rights by ending wars. Madre, another funder focused on gender justice, makes grants that support women as defenders of communities in times of war and important participants in peace processes.
Across this vast and varied philanthropic sector, funders are increasingly understanding the importance of working locally and supporting locally led initiatives. Climate security and cyber security are also likely to see increasing grantmaker attention in coming years.
