Funding trends for LGBTQ grants
The percentage of adults in the United States who identify as LGBTQ+ make up at least 7.6% of the population. One in 5 Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ+ and a higher percentage of Latinx and non-Latinx Black adults are also likely to “identify as something other than heterosexual” than in 2012, when Gallup began measuring LGBTQ identification. About 1.6% of all U.S. adults, and about 5% of young adults, are transgender or nonbinary.
Organizations that serve these communities run the gamut from non-LGBTQ-specific groups whose work includes programs targeted to sexual minorities to LGBTQ+-focused organizations working to address healthcare access, cultural change, and many other issues in order to create a more inclusive society. There is also a growing number of intersectional nonprofits specifically geared toward people with overlapping identities, for example, groups for LGBTQ people living with disabilities.
LGBTQ causes received only $.25 out of every $100 awarded by U.S. foundations in 2022. Even after marked progress in the fundraising arena, U.S. foundations still only give about $.04 out of every $100 awarded to nonprofits serving transgender communities.
On the private foundation side, LGBTQ+ support is highly concentrated, with the top 10 largest funders responsible for 52% of foundation support to U.S. LGBTQ nonprofits, Funders for LGBTQ Issues reports. Gilead Sciences alone accounted for about 14% of total foundation support for LGBTQ+ causes in 2022, and the top 20 funders provided more than 67%. Individual giving is a top source of revenue for many LGBTQI nonprofits, Movement Advancement Project reports.
One trend to watch for in coming years is whether or not LGBTQ+ funders and larger nonprofits alike move to tap into the billions of dollars of estimated legacy giving that will become available with the passing of the “Stonewall generation” of LGBTQ+ elders, many if not most of whom don’t have direct family heirs.
Where are LGBTQ grants going?
The vast majority, 79%, of funder support tracked by Funders for LGBTQ Issues was directed to the general LGBTQ+ community in 2022. Funding directed to more specific populations such as lesbians, two-spirit people, or bisexual people accounted for much smaller shares. The one LGBTQ+ community where directed funding is increasing is transgender, gender-nonconforming and nonbinary, a population that received 19% of funding tracked by Funders for LGBTQ Issues in 2022.
Most institutional funding in 2022 went to national organizations. California and New York were the most highly funded states.
Health and well-being, civil rights, and programs to strengthen LGBTQ+ communities and increase visibility were the top-funded issues in 2022, according to Funders for LGBTQ Issues. Grants are also made for education, legislative advocacy, violence prevention, arts and culture, and ending homophobia and transphobia, among other issues.
In a June 2024 IP article, Dawn Wolf further parses the 2022 Funders for LGBTQ Issues report, revealing how the LGBTQ funding space is working towards not losing further ground in a shift from regional and state funding to national grantmaking.
History of LGBTQ philanthropy
Some of the earliest giving for LGBTQ+ issues came out of “by us and for us” community foundations like the Stonewall Community Foundation and the Horizons Foundation — the first U.S. foundation to make a grant to an AIDS service provider. Today, community and public foundations — like the Tides Foundation, Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, and Groundswell Fund — play significant roles in supporting smaller grassroots organizations and making grants focused on LGBTQ+ communities of color.
Gaps in LGBTQ funding
The majority of philanthropic dollars are directed to the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, but funding has increased in recent years for communities historically under-resourced by philanthropy, which includes trans communities, BIPOC LGBTQ+ communities and the U.S. South. That said, these groups and regions still remain underfunded relative to the size of the populations and the need, especially in the face of a conservative backlash and attack on trans rights. As Alexander Lee, deputy director of Funders for LGBTQ Issues, notes in an interview with IP, some hope remains in funding for trans rights.
