Funding trends in environmental conservation
Philanthropic funding for conservation is rooted in the establishment of stalwart environmental organizations like the National Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy and the World Wide Fund for Nature, and the preservation of wide swaths of green space across the United States.
Taking a more ecologically minded approach, and the evolving scientific connection between pollution and environmental degradation, philanthropy has since expanded to pollution abatement programs, and more recently, as a response to a warming climate, a focus on green, low-impact development that is more resilient.
Funding for conservation and related environmental concerns is competitive, driven by the large number of smaller grassroots organizations that exist in the space. A wide array of funders, including large national organizations, smaller private foundations and corporate philanthropy helps to ensure funding opportunities for organizations at the local, national or global levels. Moreover, driven by new donors — including many of the world’s billionaires and a wide array of celebrity spokespersons — interest in the environment continues to grow.
